Vera A Cook, 91, of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away peacefully, on June 18, 2025. Born to Paul and Lillian (née Vogt) Hingsbergen on her daddy’s birthday, December 14. She attended St. Stephen’s Elementary, graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1951, and went one semester at Our Lady of Cincinnati. She married Howard D. Cook. She was a lifetime member of St. Stephens/St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church.
Vera worked as a School Crossing guard, City of Hamilton Meter Maid, Meter Repair and Parks & Recreation facilities manager, after retiring she worked at McDonald’s and was a driver with United Transportation Services.
Vera was a fun loving, devoted mother to seven children, Dennis Cook, Jerome Cook, Virgil (Debi) Cook, Leonard (Angie) Cook, Dorothy Bauer, Anita (Robert) Sackenheim, and Paul (Allison) Cook, and she had 37 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, and 15 great great grandchildren. She counted them instead of sheep, to get to sleep. Vera had numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends whom she loved deeply.
“Cookie” was a member of AARP, Widow Persons, and was the ABWA Woman of the Year. She won Senior Olympics medals in multiple sports.
Vera’s favorite activities included swimming, watching old movies, concerts, shows at LaComedia, singing with the Harmonettes Barbershop Chorus and Hamilton Symphony Chorale, teaching water aerobics at the Y, working hundreds of puzzles, playing games, and spending time with her very large family. She never missed a birthday party, graduation, shower, or wedding and held every baby born into her brood. She loved animals of all kinds. Her pets were very fat and happy members of the family.
Her faith in God sustained her through the trials of life, praying the rosary daily. Her gentle, humble, generous spirit and humor were evident in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Anna Marie (Sister Dorothy-Sister of Notre Dame de Namur), Theresa (William) Sackenheim, Joseph (Caroline) Hingsbergen, along with several grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held Friday, June 27 at 10 am, St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 224 Dayton Street, Hamilton, Ohio, 45011. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately after mass, at the Fenmont Hall, 229 N Third St. Hamilton. OH 45011.
