Robert Dean Gorney, age 82, went peacefully home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 25, 2025 in Cincinnati, OH. He was born in East Chicago, Indiana on February 2, 1943 to Chester and Margaret (Shuttz) Gorney. On June 26, 1965, Robert married the love of his life, Joan Carol Fary, in East Chicago, Indiana. They resided in Griffith, Indiana for 10 years followed by residency in Worthington, OH; East Brunswick, NJ; Waldorf, MD; Conway, SC and Fairfield, OH. They were married 55 years before Joan passed away March 2, 2021. Robert (Bob) was known for his hard work, leadership, generosity, humor, faith and love for family and friends. Growing up, he played baseball and football, had a paper route and served in the church as an altar boy. When Bob was just out of high school, he started working at Simmons mattress company in Indiana. Through the years, he was promoted to different management positions in manufacturing at Simmons in Columbus, Ohio and then Elizabeth, NJ. His final position before retirement was Vice President of Manufacturing for Mattress Discounters in Maryland. Although Bob was very successful in his career without a college degree, he wanted to be an example to his grandchildren and he went back to school in his fifties to complete his bachelor’s degree! Bob had a strong work ethic, but made family a priority. He was involved in coaching little league, leading Indian Princesses and Indian Guides and took the family on vacations. He liked to grill out in the summer and while the food was cooking, he would play with his children in the backyard. Bowling was a family activity and when his children were grown, he used to love to golf with his son and son-in-laws. When the grandchildren came along, Bob and Joan took the whole family to Disney two different times and they would host the grandkids for a week by themselves over the summer. Bob and Joan were active in the Catholic church. They were Pre-Cana mentors in Columbus. They also became involved in Bible studies in their church and their love for Jesus and their faith grew. They would do daily Bible devotions and pray together. Bob was always up for playing a game. He and Joan taught many people how to play mahjong and canasta over the years and had many fun family game nights. He and Joan also enjoyed attending local theater productions and concerts. Robert is survived by his three children: Deb (Robb) Miller, Bob (Janet) Gorney and Amy (Michael) Higgins; grandchildren: Bobby Gorney, Allie (Rocky) McGuire, Amber Gorney, David (Emara) Higgins and Cole Gorney; great grandchildren: Willow and Juniper McGuire; sister Pat Hanshew, brother Dennis (Linda) Gorney, sister-in-law, Barb Gorney, brother-in-law, Mike (Mary) Fary and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Gorney; parents, Chester and Margaret Gorney; brother Don Gorney; sister Joan Kouros and brother-in-law Pete Kouros. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Sanctuary Pointe Nursing Facility for their care of Bob and friendship to Bob over these last few years. A memorial gathering for staff and family friends will take place at Sanctuary Pointe on a date yet to be determined. A Funeral Mass will take place June 14th 10:00 am (CST) at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 440 Joliet Street, Dyer, IN 46311.
