David Day Pontius, 73, died peacefully at the Veterans Home in Chillicothe, Ohio on November 22, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife, June (1999), his father Thomas (2015), and his mother, Suzanne (2022). Surviving are Dave’s sisters Nancy Mitchell (Mark) and Barb Pontius Stein, nieces and nephews Elizabeth Duermit Moreau (Mike), Jeff Mitchell (Sammy), Katherine Lawrence (Jerry), Jake Duermit, and his great niece Maya Lawrence. Dave was born on May 24, 1952, to Thomas M. and Suzanne D. Pontius in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1959 Dave moved with his family to Mariemont, Ohio. Dave was a Boy Scout, and enjoyed the outdoors, particularly camping and fishing trips to Florida with family and friends. Dave graduated from Mariemont High School in 1970 and enlisted in the US Army the following year. Dave served in Viet Nam and Korea as a Radio Electrician and was honorably discharged in 1973. Following his service, Dave worked as a police dispatcher in Forest Park, Ohio and Miamisburg, Ohio, and the US Internal Revenue Service in Covington, Kentucky. It was at his job with the IRS that Dave met and fell in love with June Smith, whom he married in 1996. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending time with all their family. Dave retired in 2002 and enjoyed attending country western concerts, making friends with servers in his favorite local restaurants, and supporting those friends and others in so many ways. Dave loved all things “Graeter’s” and was a generous donor to their Cones for the Cure event. Dave moved to Chillicothe, Ohio in 2022 to receive care in several programs for Veterans. Dave’s humor and generosity endeared him to those he met there, and he loved Chillicothe’s culture of respect for Veterans. Dave’s service was regularly acknowledged there, culminating in an Honor Walk following his passing at the VA. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and Dave’s ashes will be interred at Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio next to those of his wife, June. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. THE WEBSTER FUNERAL, Fairfield is serving the family. www.websterfuneralhomes.com
